24 Hours in New York City: Foodie Tour

My kids' and I foodie adventure began on the Upper West Side of Manhattan at Jacob's Pickle a soul food pub that makes it's own pickles. You have to order the pickle sampler... sweet, spicy, dill, sour... they were outstanding. Our favorite was the Special Sour Cukes.

If you are wise you'll order lunch with the idea that each dish is a family size portion. We ordered the Chicken and Pancakes, Leek Country Sausage and Mushroom Mac n Cheese not realizing that we had ordered enough food for 6 not 3. It was delicious but way too much food!

We walked over to the Hayden Planetarium to check out their space exhibit before the 4 pm showing of Dark Universe. My kids and myself are lovers of science fiction and real world space exploration. The exhibits are thought provocative and interactive.

After we watched the IMAX show we decide to take a stroll. It was a beautiful Spring day so we headed across the street to Central Park. New York was in bloom both people and nature were sites to see. We headed out of the park through Strawberry Fields the area dedicated to the memory of John Lennon. It is located on 72St not far from The Dakota where John lived and was killed.
We headed downtown to 40th St near Bryant Park where our hotel was located. The plan was to relax for a little while and then check out a Korean BBQ restaurant in Little Korean Town which is in walking distance from our hotel. Being teens they were pooped, and we were all still full from our huge lunch. We decided to enjoy the comfy beds at the hotel, watch Night At the Museum and buy some snacks from the gourmet deli next door.

The next morning we ate breakfast at La Pain Quotidien which had a wonderful selection of French pastries and hot breakfasts like Belgian waffles and steel cut oatmeal. After breakfast we headed to the Lower East Side to check out two candy stores. Our first stop was The Sweet Life which was a treasure trove of every type of candy imaginable. They had homemade chocolates and other specialties along with imported candies from all over Europe. Papabubble was our next stop. Their hard candy is crafted in the store and is as delicious too eat as it is beautiful to behold. It was hard not to eat all the great sweets we selected, but we held off and went to lunch first.

I was really looking forward to eating at Balaboosta because I own Einat Admony cookbook and I love it. We were not disappointed. My daughter had the Shakshouka which is an egg baked in a spicy tomato sauce with spinach and served with grilled sourdough. I had the Moroccan Fish Cazuela which was a lemony fish in a red pepper paprika sauce. My son had the Grilled Skirt Steak which had an outrageously delicious marinade. Both my daughter and I are not steak eaters and we kept asking for bites.
After this fantastic lunch we strolled around the East Side and headed into Nolita and then boarded the subway back to Grand Central Station and hopped on the train home after picking up our luggage at the hotel.
